Frost Museum of Science New Paleontology Exhibition, The Dig

The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science in Downtown Miami has launched its latest venture, The Dig, an interactive exhibition and laboratory marking the start of South Florida’s only active paleontology research program. This unique experience offers visitors a firsthand look into the world of fossil discovery, preparation, and research.

Frost Museum of Science Unveils New Paleontology Exhibition, The Dig

At the heart of The Dig is the PaleoLab, a working fossil preparation laboratory where guests can witness the meticulous process of unearthing ancient specimens. The lab offers real-time views of fossil preparation through interactive video feeds and observation windows, providing a rare glimpse into the behind-the-scenes work of paleontologists.

According to Dr. Cary Woodruff, Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology, the exhibition is designed to engage visitors in the science of fossil study. “The Dig is a unique fusion of exhibition and active research,” said Dr. Woodruff. Guests can explore how fossils provide insights into biodiversity, evolution, and environmental change, which help inform current scientific challenges.

The Dig offers several hands-on activities, allowing visitors to explore the tools and techniques paleontologists use. These include stations where guests can identify fossils and virtually reconstruct extinct creatures. One of the highlights is a full-scale cast of the “Tufts-Love” Tyrannosaurus rex skull, the most complete T. rex skull ever discovered.

This exhibition underscores Frost Science’s commitment to bridging the gap between scientific research and public engagement. It also solidifies the museum’s role as a leader in education, discovery, and outreach in the field of paleontology.

After exploring the exhibition, aspiring paleontologists can dig into some brain food at the museum’s cafe, Food@Science, to power through the rest of the day. Operated by Constellation Culinary Group, the cafe elevates the Frost Science experience by offering themed menu items related to the museum’s exhibitions, such as The Dig Dessert ($5), which consists of chocolate fudge with graham crackers dust and a solid wafer,  topped with bone-shaped candy.

The Dig is included with all museum admissions, providing guests with access to this innovative and educational experience. To learn more about Frost Science and its paleontology research, visit www.frostscience.org/thedig or follow @frostscience on social media.
